Is it safe to go into a flooded basement?
Not if the water could reach outlets, cords or appliances. Stay out until the power to the basement is off, and only shut it off yourself if you can reach the breaker without stepping in water.
Why does my basement flood when it rains hard?
Common causes are a sump pump that fails or can't keep up, gutters dumping water against the foundation, ground that slopes toward the house, and cracks in the foundation. The cleanup is the same, but finding the cause helps keep it from happening again.
Is water from a floor drain dangerous?
It can be. Water that backs up from a drain or sewer line can carry bacteria, so it needs more removal and sanitizing than clean water from a supply line. Avoid touching it and keep kids and pets away.
How fast can mold start in a wet basement?
Mold can start growing within 24 to 48 hours, which is why fast water removal and thorough drying matter so much.
