Can smoke smell be removed?
Often, yes. Smoke odor lives in soot residue, porous materials and the air. Cleaning plus odor treatment such as thermal fogging addresses it; some heavily damaged materials have to be removed instead.
Should I clean soot myself?
It's better not to. Wiping or the wrong cleaner can push soot deeper into paint, fabric and wood and make it harder to remove.
